### Summary
The position is a Staff Dental Hygienist will be assigned to Dental Service at the Loma Linda VA Healthcare System in Loma Linda, California. The Dental Hygienist provides direct patient care under the general supervision of the dentist and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision while serving at the full performance level, receiving little to no guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patient issues, and require general supervision.
**Work Schedule:** Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

### Responsibilities
Serves as a Licensed Dental Hygienist responsible for performing basic and advanced prophylactic and preventive dental procedures and the treatment of patients with related medical and dental problems.
Performs examinations, applies topical agents such as fluoride and antibiotics, plans periodontal treatment and provides patient education related to dental hygiene.
Upon referral by staff dentists and residents, administers oral prophylactic and dental hygiene treatment to patients presenting a variety of conditions.
Performs procedures such as medical and dental history to review to search for evidence of past and present conditions which may complicate or alter dental hygiene treatment.
Refers abnormalities to the dentist or resident.
In postoperative care of oral surgery and periodontal surgery patients, changes dressings, applies topical anesthetics and provides self-care instructions.
Instructs patients at chair side in oral hygiene, brushing, flossing techniques and the proper use of periodontal aids.
Cleans, sharpens and sends all hygiene instruments to SPS for sterilization.
Follows all infection control and disinfection protocols applicable in the Dental Service.
Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* **United States Citizenship**: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* **English Language Proficiency:**Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct
patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
* **Physical standards:** All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
* **Education:**Must posses an Associate Degree or higher in an accredited dental hygiene program. This program must be accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
* **License:**Applicants must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
* **Certification:** Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. Accredited dental hygiene programs contain curriculum addressing radiologic procedures which will meet the requirement for certification as dental radiographers.
**Preferred Experience:** Prior Dental Hygienist experience.
**Grade Determinations**: To qualify for the GS-9 you must possess 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
(a) Assignments. Employees at this level serve as staff dental hygienists at the full performance level. It is expected that they provide direct patient care and receive guidance from higher-level or supervisory staff members for only the most complex patients and require only general supervision from a dentist. Assignments at this level include but are not limited to: patient medical assessment (e.g. medical/dental history, social history, vital signs, full periodontal assessment and charting), disease and treatment management recommendations, denture care, scaling and root planing, radiographs/image interpretation, patient education (e.g. post-procedure, tobacco cessation, caries and perio-disease prevention), behavior management, management of stable medically compromised patients (including risk factors), instrument sharpening, inter-service communication.

**Physical Requirements:**Physical demands are usually include moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (2 hours); Repeated bending (3 hours); Near Vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger 1 to 4; Both eyes required; depth perception; Hearing (aid permitted), and Mental/ Emotional stability required.
